Proverbs 6 says, “Six things God hates, seven are an abomination”.

The six things are as follows:

  1. A proud look.
  2. A lying tongue.
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood.
  4. A heart that devises wicked imaginations.
  5. Feet that are swift to run to mischief.
  6. A false witness that speaks lies.
  7. He that sows discord among the brethren.

Today, I would like to expound on each of these:

  1. God says that pride comes before the fall.  God requires that we humble ourselves in His sight.  We need to crucify our carnal man and glorify Him…to Him belongs all of the glory.
  2. A lying tongue is selfishly motivated.  It’s purpose is to avoid responsibility or to stir up controversy.  Lying leads to bondage but the truth will set you free.
  3. God has called us to be our brothers keeper.  To overpower a weaker brother or to take advantage is proof that the love of God is not in us.  We instead are called to minister to the weak and protect the innocent.
  4. We are called to think upon that which is good, holy and pure.  The spiritual battlefield is the mind.  If we allow seeds of wicked imaginations to grow they will choke out that which God desires to reap as a  harvest.  Wicked imaginations will reap terrible results if not plucked out.
  5. Our feet are intended to deliver the gospel of truth not to run to mischief.  To run to mischief is to send a formal invitation for sin to manifest and abound in our lives.
  6. Our testimony and words followed by actions should be anchored in truth.  To mislead and proclaim false doctrine will imprison others and place a sentence of death on both our lives.  It will place us in bondage and block the help that we need from coming.
  7. We are to stir up the gifts within us by walking in the Spirit.  We are to sow life.  Our message should be to  unify not to feed the destructive forces of discord.  Our work should be to encourage, exhort and we should be a catalyst for peace.

Our relationship with God should be founded in love.  He loves us beyond our ability to comprehend.  Because He loves us He provides this list of things He hates so that we can avoid them.  Satan wants us to fail and will deceive us into falling into a trap where these 7 things are alive and well in our lives.  They will bring destruction.  Turn from them, resist the devil and he will flee.
